St Michael Walking Circuit

A slightly longer but very enjoyable circular walk that takes you away from the main tourist trails. It combines woodland, meadows and open views across the surrounding countryside.

Route description

From Aurum Resort, walk to the square in Černý Důl, then turn left towards the quarry. Here you join the Okolo lomu (Around the Quarry) nature trail before continuing along the marked St Michael’s circular route.

The first section follows a mountain road, before the path turns left into the forest. From there, it leads through beautiful woodland and open meadows, with lovely views of the surrounding landscape.

This is one of the quietest parts of the route. You’ll usually meet very few people here, so you can enjoy the countryside at its most peaceful.

Zlaťák’s tip

During mushroom season, you may find plenty of edible mushrooms along the way - and plenty of other mushroom hunters too. For the best finds, it’s worth setting off early.

Interesting Facts

  • For much of the walk, you’ll be accompanied by views of the unique freight ropeway that carries limestone from the quarry. Towards the end of the route, you’ll pass its highest point, which runs surprisingly close to the ground to keep elevation changes to a minimum.

  • You’ll also walk through Oak Avenue, where two protected oak trees grow - one around 100 years old, the other an impressive 180 years old. Oaks grow very slowly and only reach maturity at around one hundred years of age. A 180-year-old oak is therefore a true veteran, already standing here when ore mining was still part of life in the Krkonoše Mountains. Oaks can live for up to 500 years, sometimes even longer, so these old trees may still be only halfway through their natural lifespan. In 2005, another 42 young oaks were planted along the avenue - trees that may still be standing here three or four centuries from now.
