Route description

From Aurum Resort, turn right towards the parking garage and sports facilities. Just below them, you’ll find a small, easy-to-miss footpath that crosses a little footbridge and leads into the forest.

The path then winds through pleasant woodland to a small group of holiday cottages, where it joins a wider forest track. Turn right here.

Before long, the trees open up and you’ll see a large fallow deer enclosure. This is a lovely place to slow your pace, stay quiet for a moment and simply watch.

Continue along the forest track until you reach the main road. For the way back, we recommend avoiding the road. Instead, follow the marked path called Pěšník, which takes you back below Aurum Resort away from the traffic.

Zlaťák’s tip

Early evening is a lovely time to go, as the deer are often at their most active. You can also turn the walk into a little mission: who will be the first to spot a deer?

Interesting Facts
  • Each fallow deer has its own unique pattern of spots, rather like a human fingerprint - no two are exactly the same. Fallow deer are shy, but also curious. If you stand calmly and quietly, they may stop and watch you for a while too.

  • The easiest way to recognise a fallow deer is by its antlers. Instead of the narrow branching antlers seen in many other deer, the male’s antlers broaden into elegant palm-shaped blades with finger-like edges, a little like an open hand. Males shed their antlers every April, and new ones grow back by August. They become larger and stronger year by year, usually reaching their finest form when the animal is around ten years old. Their antlers are among the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom and can grow by as much as 2.5 centimetres in a single day.

  • Autumn is the rutting season, when the males make deep calls and compete for females. It is one of the liveliest times to see the enclosure.
